Thank you for your interest in Woodwynd Cairn Terriers.  I am dedicated to producing healthy, well-socialized puppies from show quality stock.  Almost all the dogs I own are shown either in conformation (the beauty contest) or obedience, rally, or agility.  I have a kennel set up in my heated/air conditioned garage and all the dogs spend some time in the house with me and my son on a regular basis.  Puppies are born (whelped) in my bedroom where I can monitor their progress at any time.  They also get used to human smells/sounds/activity. I pride myself in the care of mommy and puppies from the time she is pregnant to the time the puppies go home.  Human interaction is of the utmost importance in a puppies development and puppies are handled and cuddled continually.  My females must be at least two years old before I consider breeding them.  Each female is evaluated as to the ease of pregnancy, whelping and recovery.  This evaluation determines when (if at all) she is bred.  I research my dogs background for several generations as to genetics and characteristics and match up male and female that will produce the best quality puppy.  I breed to produce a show dog for myself.  I know you are thinking that you probably don't want a show dog BUT think about this...if I'm producing a show dog for myself, how good are ALL the puppies going to be.  Pet quality puppies are sold on mandatory spay/neuter contracts.  Breedable/Show dogs are sold on co-ownership contracts with specific, agreed upon, terms.

Please be aware, 80% of the cairns out there have a genetic disorder called microvascular dysplasia.  This is a genetic disorder that has no cure or treatment and the dogs usually die by seven years old.  I have researched my dogs backgrounds to insure there is no possibility of this genetic problem, in fact, I guarantee it.

I do require pre-purchase interviews so we both can be comfortable with your decision.  The interview gives you the opportunity to meet at least mommy and relatives.  There will be an questionaire for you to fill out so I can match up the best personality puppy to your families personality.  I advise future cairn owners not to get stuck on a gender or color because ultimately your looking for a specific personality.

There is no guarantee on color.  Cairns come in a variety of colors and most change colors throughout their lifetime, some get darker, some get lighter.  My first cairn was a wheaton and when I lost him, I vowed I only wanted another light one.  Lo and behold, when I went to interview for my next cairn, I fell in love with a dark one (Boomer) and the rest is history!

Puppy availability is always a question that comes up with potential new owners.  Most potential new owners believe all puppies are born in the spring or that breeders should have puppies available according to their time frame.  There is no "season" for puppies to be born and to obtain a puppy from a reputable breeder might take awhile, sometimes a year or more, depending on the reputable breeders breeding schedule and the cooperation of the females.  It is best to be put on a waiting list with a reputable breeder then to just find an available puppy from anyone.  I can tell you from experience with my new owners, it was definitely worth the wait.  Usually the ones that have waited have had that bad experience of not waiting for a reputable breeder and thinking they found one from what they thought was a "good" breeder.  They realized the difference after it was too late and vowed not to make the same mistake again.  Anyone can say anything on the internet, whether it's true or not is something that has to be determined and I am more than willing to help you find a quality dog from a reputable breeder.

Please feel free to contact me for further information or if you have any questions.
